even if you can't replicate a business model, you still may be able to grab bits and pieces from models that'll help you create your own business model.

The key is to understand WHY they work (NOT how they work) and WHAT is needed to implement them.

So ... let's take Facebook's online business model for example.

And let's focus on the (WHY it works) aspect here.

Facebook makes money by selling advertisements.

Sure ... the social gathering is the biggest draw, but the bottom line for Facebook, is the conducive environment it creates, allowing for a lucrative market to sell advertisements.

So we can say Facebook's business model is:

(A.) Create a platform that brings eyeballs into one area. (In their case, it just happens to be by way of a social media platform. )

Then ...

(B.) Sell ads to people who see the benefit of promoting their stuff in front of those eyeballs.

A simple online business model which Facebook has taken the world by storm with.

You can also throw Google in that mix.
Since search engines are a valuable resource for finding things online, Google takes the advantage of the eyeballs that it draws on its platform to sell advertisements as well.
